The Republic has won eight categories at the tenth anniversary of the Gambia National Journalism Award with its editor-in-chief Mustapha K Darboe who won four categories, walking away with the Journalist of the Year award.

The stories showcase outstanding journalism in reporting on agriculture, environment, taxation, business and finance, children’s rights, migrant rights and investigative journalism. The various honoured works were authored by Mustapha K Darboe, Mariam Sankanu, Talibeh Hydara, Josef Skrdlik, all staff of The Republic, and freelance contributors Kaddy Jawo and Muhammed Diop.

Investigative journalist Kaddy Jawo receives award for a cross-border investigation which looks into the impact of fish meals and fish oil factories in Senegal, Mauritania and The Gambia on rising price of fish, depleting fish stock and the environment. The investigation was conducted by Mustapha K Darboe, Kaddy Jawo and Muhammed Diop.

The awards came barely a month after the publication’s investigation on the alleged wrongdoing in the sale of the assets of the former Gambian president Yahya Jammeh was judged best investigative piece in 2025 at the African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The AIJC is the largest gathering of African investigative journalists which celebrates 20 years this year.

In September, The Republic was also awarded for its in-depth reporting, furthering human rights in the country by the African Network Against Extrajudicial Killing and Enforced Disappearances (ANEKED).

“This is a huge pat on the back for a publication that is barely two years old. None of this would have been possible if not for the contribution of those who financially support our work. We are happy you consider us worthy of these donations,” said editor-in-chief Mustapha K Darboe.
